Biden's Support Is Eroding Among Gen Z

For years, we've been told that the youth are overwelmingly liberal and come out in droves to support the Democratic party. Now, it seems like that tide is turning as many are showing that Trumps most solid base of support in 2024 if coming from Gen Z.
Background: In 2020, Joe Biden secured 59% of the vote from individuals under the age of 30. However, recent data suggests a significant shift in support among the nation's youngest voters. When asked about their voting preferences today, Biden's support dropped to 43%, signaling a decline in approval.

Interestingly, Donald Trump has seen an uptick in popularity among young voters. In a hypothetical rematch, 45% of Gen Z and young millennials expressed their intention to vote for Trump, compared to the 35% he received in 2020. Moreover, Trump's support has grown among 30- to 39-year-olds, leading Biden by 11 points according to an Emerson poll, with 49% supporting Trump and 38% supporting Biden in this age group.
Why the Shift?: The decline in support for Biden among young voters seems to stem from his handling, or rather mishandling, of the situation following the Hamas attack on Israel. On one hand, you've got the super-left youth who are displeased because Biden didn't rush to throw his weight behind Hamas, reflecting their increasingly progressive inclinations. Meanwhile, the more moderate youth find themselves disillusioned with Biden's failure to assertively champion Israel in the face of the conflict.
What this means: The shift in youth support towards Trump might not be a game-changer on its own, but what could significantly impact the election is the dwindling number of volunteers for Biden. High school and college-aged individuals make up the bulk of canvassers and phone bankers for political campaigns. With Biden losing backing among this vital volunteer base, it could mean that for every college student he loses, there's a potential absence of calls or emails to over 100 Democrats, signaling a potential organizational setback for his campaign.
