Trump’s Tax and Spending Bill Clears Senate

The Senate narrowly passed President Trump’s massive tax and spending package Tuesday, marking a major victory in his second-term agenda. The bill passed 51–50, with Vice President JD Vance casting the tie-breaking vote. CBS News reports that all but three Republicans supported the legislation—Sens. Thom Tillis, Rand Paul, and Susan Collins voted no. Senator Thune called it an “incredible victory for the American people.”
In a surprising turn, the Senate voted 99–1 to remove a 10-year federal ban on state regulation of artificial intelligence, adopting an amendment from Sen. Marsha Blackburn. Reuters notes that Thom Tillis was the lone “no” vote, choosing to retain the ban despite the overwhelming consensus.
Meanwhile, AOL highlights that Sen. Collins voted to keep illegal immigrants on government benefits, opposing an amendment by Sen. John Cornyn. That amendment—which would have reduced Medicaid payments to states offering health care to illegal immigrants convicted of crimes—failed in a 56–44 vote after falling short of the 60-vote threshold.
Other provisions include slashing the $7,500 EV tax credit for vehicles purchased after September 30. CNBC reports the move is aimed at refocusing incentives toward American-made energy solutions.
The House is now launching its final sprint. Fox News says committee hearings begin Wednesday morning. Conservatives like Reps. Chip Roy and Ralph Norman are voicing concerns, but their opposition won’t stall the process unless four or more GOP representatives vote no on the floor.
If passed, the bill would make permanent the 2017 Trump tax brackets, create new deductions for tips and overtime, add senior tax relief, increase ICE funding, and boost national defense.
🧾 Note: Lisa Murkowski (up in 2028), Rand Paul (2028), and Thom Tillis (2026, not seeking re-election) voted against the bill..
